IT IS A LIE! RIVERS REC DENIES PURPORTED INEC REPORT
INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Rivers State, Mr. Ikoiwak Aniedi Abasi, has denied making a purported report, excerpts of which were published by some online media on Sunday. The report which clearly blamed one of the major political parties in the rerun election as being behind the violence recorded during the election on 19th March, 2016 also included purported recommendations suggesting to INEC to conduct election for the eight cancelled LGA’s on 2nd April, 2016.
Mr. Ikoiwak who described the report as absolute bunkum while speaking exclusively to an i-votes reporter noted that the first proof that the report is fake is that he does not have powers to recommend a date to INEC on when it should conduct elections so he could not have made that recommendation contained in the fake report.
He said “I do not have the powers to make recommendations for INEC on when it should conduct elections. I have no knowledge of this so-called REC report and it’s a figment of the imagination of its callous authors.
My report was clear and debunked the lies that were spread that INEC had fake ballot papers and result sheets. None of these happened. Somebody concocted these lies and is using the lack of regulation of the social media to spread lies hoping that it catches on. . . …It is certainly not from me.”
It will be recalled that INEC has since released an official statement after the Rivers rerun election and has stated it can only conduct the remaining elections in Rivers State after it receives assurances from the relevant security agencies for provision of adequate security for INEC staff, observers and indeed electorate in Rivers state
